In my judgment, Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics by Moran et al is an excellent book, especially in its coverage of the difficult-to-learn subject of the 2nd law of thermodynamics and entropy. Another good book is Introduction to Engineering Thermodynamics by Smith and Van Ness. Starting with an overview of the three laws of thermodynamics, MacArthur "genius grant" winner R. Stephen Berry explains in this short book the fundamentals of a fundamental science. Readers learn both the history of thermodynamics, which began with attempts to solve everyday engineering problems, and ongoing controversy and unsolved puzzles.

Regarding the subjects presented in the next three chapters - thermodynamic potentials, gaseous reactions and the thermodynamics of dilute solutions - my view is that today's student would be better advised to study a more contemporary text. /5(79). Mar 17,  · A romantic description of the second law of thermodynamics is that the universe becomes increasingly disordered.

But what does that actually mean. Starting with an overview of the three laws of thermodynamics, MacArthur "genius grant" winner R. Stephen Berry explains in this short book the fundamentals of a fundamental science.

This book offers a thorough overview of thermodynamics that reflects the contents of a modern university course on the subject and meets the needs of students and young scientists and pays detailed attention to non-equilibrium processes and stationary states in discontinuous and continuous systems.

The thermodynamic arrow of time is provided by the second law of thermodynamics, which says that in an isolated system, entropy tends to increase with time. Entropy can be thought of as a measure of microscopic disorder; thus the second law implies that time is asymmetrical.

The book, which is entirely non-mathematical, demands an acquaintance with thermodynamics such as might be expected of any college student of physics, engineering, or chemistry, but the argument can be understood by anyone interested in the critical analysis of the fundamental concepts of science.Thermodynamics is the branch of science concerned with heat and temperature and their relation to energy and work.

Being concentrated on a wide range of applications of thermodynamics, this book gathers a series of contributions by the finest scientists in the world, gathered in an orderly manner.Introduction to Thermodynamics; The First Law of Thermodynamics; and reveals much about the nature of heat transfer.
